The Intimate Apocalypse
Notes
on a Pilgrimage into Revelation
"What
is the secret room along this path I'm walking, a piece of charcoal for
a pilgrim's staff? I look at the drawings arrayed across my
drafting table. The images have taken shape on such an
intimate
scale that the figures cannot fit onto the page. They spill
off
the edges, their lines extending into a space that exists only in the
imagination. I have depicted these visions at the closest
possible range, wanting to draw--literally--near to the story, to peer
into it so closely that the lines of connection between the landscape
of Revelation and the landscape of my life are laid bare. Revealed."
-from The Intimate Apocalypse
In
the Middle Ages, scribes and artists created richly illustrated
manuscripts that invited the reader into a pilgrimage through the
bizarre and beautiful book of Revelation. Inspired by these
illuminated manuscripts, Jan began an artful apocalyptic pilgrimage of
her own. The dozen charcoal drawings that she created along
the
way, and the reflections that accompany them, invite the reader into a
thoughtful journey through one of the most hopeful, imaginative, and
powerful books of the Bible.
